Gunmen Kill at Least 12 at Jewish Holiday Event on Sydney’s Bondi Beach

SYDNEY — Two gunmen opened fire during a Jewish holiday celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday, killing at least 12 people in what Australian authorities described as a terrorist attack, officials said.

Police shot and killed one of the attackers at the scene, and a second suspect was arrested and remains in critical condition, authorities said. At least 29 people were wounded, including two police officers, according to Mal Lanyon, the commissioner of the New South Wales Police Force.

The shooting unfolded at one of Australia’s most popular beaches and prompted a large emergency response. Authorities said one of the gunmen was known to security services, though there had been no specific intelligence indicating an imminent threat.

The attack comes amid a rise in antisemitic incidents across Australia over the past year. Officials said they were investigating the shooting but did not indicate whether it was connected to those previous incidents.

An investigation is ongoing, and authorities have urged the public to avoid the area as police continue to gather evidence.
